More often than we’d like to see, we encounter small companies whose IT companies are holding their information and technology hostage. While you may be thinking, “Not my IT provider… they would never do that,” the truth is, you’d be shocked at how often we hear about providers that hold back on transferring (and even sharing) their client’s credentials.
Here’s a large red flag when it comes to the ownership of your “keys to the castle”:
YOUR IT PROVIDER IS THE ONLY ONE WHO KNOWS YOUR ACCESS CREDENTIALS

As a business owner, you should be intimately aware of the state of your network and have all the access credentials for your domain registrar, website hosting account, firewall, server, e-mail accounts, etc. While your IT provider may administer these accounts, they should always provide you with a list of credentials in case you need to access these functions yourself or bring in an external provider to access your network for whatever reason. And here’s another valid reason: what if they go out of business? Then what happens??
If they balk at this request and/or try to give you reasons why it’s not a good idea, that’s a huge red flag. It’s obvious why… they see it as a threat to THEM, as perhaps you may be preparing to leave for another IT company! But a truly honest and supportive company should place YOUR best interests above all.
